Catechism Of The Council Of Trent
St. Robert Bellarmine's Committee formed by
the Council of Trent & isssued by Pp. Pius V
For more than four centuries it was known
simply as The Roman Catechism - the source, guide and standard for all other
catechisms. Commissioned by the Council of Trent, written under the
supervision of Saint Charles Borromeo, and promulgated by Saint Pius V in
1566, it was the most comprehensive and authoritative statement of Catholic
doctrine ever published.
An important resource in our time of doctrinal confusion offering precise,
simply - worded answers to questions about the Faith in a style different
from more recent catechisms. This 1923 translation by the Dominicans John A.
McHugh and Charles J. Callan is unsurpassed for accuracy and readability,
and features many useful extras.
All the doctrines of the Faith are expounded under four headings: The
Apostles' Creed, The Sacraments, The Ten Commandments, and the Lord's
Prayer. Includes a complete "Sermon Program" for Sundays and Feasts linking
doctrinal material in the Catechism to the Epistles and Gospels. Contains
complete texts of definitions and dogmatic statements since Trent,
subheadings for ease of reading & quick reference, useful citations to
passages of Saint Thomas Aquinas and others. Translator's introduction gives
historical background, extremely detailed Table of Contents and Subject

Compendium
of the Catechism WASHINGTON (August 31, 2005)— The English language
version of the new Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a
200-page synthesis of the 1992 Catechism, will be published by USCCB
Publishing, the publishing office of the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops.
Two years in the making, the Compendium was prepared by a commission
headed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI. The Pope
presented the Compendium at the Vatican in late June. Containing 598
questions and brief answers, it makes the essential contents of the faith
accessible to the broadest possible audience.
The Pope said he hoped the compendium would give Catholics and
non-Catholics easy access to the basic and essential tenets of the
Catholic faith.
The new compendium, he said, is “an authoritative, certain and complete
text regarding the essential aspects of the faith of the Church” and it
is “in harmony with the catechism approved by the Pope and destined for
the whole church.”
Hopefully the Compendium will “reopen an ideal dialogue between the
teacher and the disciple, through an urgent series of questions, which
involve the reader, encouraging him to continue in the discovery of ever
new aspects of the truth of the faith,” Pope Benedict said.
The Holy Father expressed the hope that abbreviating the text and reducing
it to the essential “might favor the assimilation and possible
memorization of the contents.”
The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church originated in 2002
when the Congregation for the Clergy and the Congregation for the Doctrine
of the Faith held an International Catechetical Congress to mark the tenth
anniversary of the release of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During
the congress, a suggestion was made that a more concise version of the
Catechism would be helpful for use with youth and young adults. Pope John
Paul II accepted the suggestion and appointed the special commission
headed by Cardinal Ratzinger. In 2004 a draft text was sent to Presidents
of Episcopal Conferences for consultation.
Seen as a companion to the widely-used Catechism of the Catholic Church,
the Compendium is structured in four parts like the Catechism. While the
text does contain some direct quotes from the Catechism used in a sidebar
fashion, the questions and answers themselves are original text. Paperback

National
Directory for Catechesis
Faith is nurtured and practiced at the heart of the human and Catholic
families. Catechesis for life in Christ is led by many different people,
requiring a multiplicity of materials. The new National Directory for
Catechesis (NDC) is the resource that provides the inspiration for all
catechesis in the United States and the reference point for formation of
catechists and preparation of catechetical materials. A companion to the General
Directory for Catechesis, the NDC builds on its themes and
contextualizes catechesis within the life of the Church in the United
States, paying close attention to ongoing social and cultural challenges.
At its core is a desire to renew catechesis in dioceses, parishes, and
schools, to fire a new energy and commitment to proclaim the Gospel.
Comprehensive in scope, the NDC provides the fundamental theological and
pastoral principles and offers guidelines for applying those principles
within the catechetical mission of the Church in the United States. The
NDC is divided into ten chapters that delve into the catechesis and
diversity, evangelization, the faith of the Church, methodology, worship
and sacraments, moral formation, the settings for catechesis, those who
catechize, catechetical ministry, and resources. Throughout the NDC, it is
reinforced that Jesus is the heart of catechesis regardless of where
catechesis takes place. The NDC is a “must-have” for anyone in
catechesis or Catholic education—teachers, principals, directors and
coordinators of religious education and youth ministry, catechists, and
students in the field.

Reasons To Believe:
How To Understand, Explain, and Defend the Catholic Faith
by best selling author Scott HahnThis book unravels mysteries, corrects misunderstandings, and offers
thoughtful, straightforward responses to common objections about the
Catholic faith.
Bestselling author Scott Hahn, a convert to Catholicism, has experienced
the doubts that so often drive discussions about God and the Church. In the
years before his conversion, he was first a nonbeliever and then an
anti-Catholic clergyman. In REASONS TO BELIEVE, he explains the "how and
why" of the Catholic faith—drawing from Scripture, his own struggles and
those of other converts, as well as from everyday life and even natural
science. Hahn shows that reason and revelation, nature and the supernatural,
are not opposed to one another; rather they offer complementary evidence
that God exists. But He doesn't merely exist. He is someone, and He has a
personality, a personal style, that is discernible and knowable. Hahn leads
readers to see that God created the universe with a purpose and a form—a
form that can be found in the Book of Genesis and that is there when we view
the natural world through a microscope, through a telescope, or through our
contact lenses. At the heart of the book is Hahn's examination of the ten
"keys to the kingdom"—the characteristics of the Church clearly evident in
the Scriptures. As the story of creation discloses, the world is a house
that has a Father, a palace where the king is really present. God created
the cosmos to be a kingdom, and that kingdom is the universal Church, fully
revealed by Jesus Christ. Hardcover, 196
pages. (Item #88651) $ 21.95 |

The How-To Book of Catholic Devotions:
Everything You Need to Know But No One Ever Taught You
What do you say when someone asks, "You're a
Catholic. So tell me, what do Catholics do when they pray a
novena?"... Or when they "offer it up."... Or "wear
a medal."... Or "go to Confession."... Or any of the
dozens of other devotions that set Catholics apart from other
Christians.
If you've ever been tongue-tied trying to explain
Catholic practices...or if you have a few questions of your own ... or
maybe you are just learning about Catholicism, you've got to read The

Aquilina and Regis J. Flaherty outline everything you need to know but
nobody ever taught you about the ways Catholics pray with sign and
symbol.
From the Angelus to an Examination of Conscience to
First Fridays, Vigil Candles, and more, you'll learn exactly what words
to say, what gestures to make, what actions to take - in short, you'll
find step-by-step guidelines to all the devotional rites and rituals of
the Catholic Faith.
But that's not all. The How-To Book of Catholic
Devotions also furnishes a history of each devotion and a reflection
on its importance in the prayer life of Catholics as well as succinct
and salient quotes from saints and prominent members of the Church.

practical advice, The How-To Book of Catholic Devotions
incorporates cautions, drawn from Scripture and Tradition for potential

Catholic Christianity
A Complete Catechism of Catholic Beliefs Based on the
Catechism of the Catholic Church
by Peter Kreeft
For the first time in 400 years the Catholic Church has authorized an official universal
catechism which instantly became an international best-seller, the Catechism of the
Catholic Church. Using this official Catechism, the highly-regarded author and professor
Peter Kreeft presents a complete compendium of all the major beliefs of Catholicism
written in his readable and concise style.
Since the Catechism of the Catholic Church was written for the express purpose of
grounding and fostering catechisms based on it for local needs and ordinary readers,
Kreeft does just that, offering a thorough summary of Catholic doctrine, morality, and
worship in a popular format with less technical language. He presents a systematic,
organic synthesis of the essential and fundamental Catholic teachings in the light of the
Second Vatican Council and the whole of the Church's Tradition.
This book is the most thorough, complete and popular catechetical summary of Catholic
belief in print that is based on the universal Catechism. (Item #90750) $16.95 |

Ransomed from Darkness:
The New Age, Christian Faith and the Battle for Souls
by Moira Noonan
Moira Noonan left Catholicism for the New Age in the early 1970s
after suffering a crippling accident for which her faith seemed to
have no answers. She went on to serve as a minister in the Church of
Religious Science for 20 years, mastering such disciplines as
clairvoyance, hypnotherapy, spiritual healing, and past-life
regression. Her tumultuous life at the time, and her subsequent
return to her original faith after a series of powerful inner
experiences, are the subjects of this absorbing account of spiritual
quest and rebirth. Noonan's story has been an inspiration to
thousands of people who have begun to feel the inadequacy of New
Age-inspired road maps to enlightenment. Her knowledge of that world
is unusually thorough and grounded in experience, and she approaches
it in a constructive, upbeat manner, making her story all the more
compelling. (Item #88610)

by Ellen Rossini
Sometimes when teaching children an aspect of our Catholic Faith, it
is helpful to have a special activity to reinforce the lesson. They need
exercises that train the mind or move the heart. For this reason, Catholic
teachers and parents will appreciate these one hundred thoughtfully crafted
activities drawn from the new universal Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Why I Became Catholic
by Sir Joseph Pope
Originally written as a personal testimony to his own children on why he became a
Catholic, this is a thoughtful and timeless conversion story of Sir Joseph Pope written
during the early part of the 20th century. Born in 1854 to a family renowned for
distinguished service to the Canadian government, Joseph carried on the family tradition
as a highly regarded civil servant.
Like St. Thomas More, Pope was held in high esteem as a public servant, and he enjoyed the
total confidence of prime ministers and governors, all whom sought his advice. He was a
prolific author of some two dozen books and pamphlets, including the official biographies
of major Canadian historical figures.
Amidst this busy public life, Sir Joseph Pope developed a profound spiritual life and a
mind always hungry for eternal truth. Raised in a nominal Anglican family, his persistent
and courageous search for the fullness of truth and grace finally led him home to the
Catholic Church. (Item #90755) $9.95 |

The Belief of Catholics
by Ronald Knox
Ronald Knox was one of the most influential British convert-writers of the 20th century.
Of his many works, The Belief of Catholics is his best-known book and his premiere piece
of apologetics. While it deals extensively with Protestantism, its target is more the
unchurched or lightly-church modern who, if he gives any thought at all to Catholicism,
thinks it mildly foreign.
As Knox knew, it is not the most difficult part of modern apologetics to convince the
devoted Protestant that he has much of Christian truth but now needs to move on to the
rest, which is found only in the Catholic Church. The most difficult part is
convincing the nominal Protestant (or nominal Catholic), the vaguely religious person, or
the person without any religious inclinations that God really does exist, that His
existence matters, and that only knowledge of Him and obedience to Him can lead to
answers to the questions that haunt everyone.
Knox discusses the truths Catholics hold, the rules Catholics
acknowledge, the strength Catholics receive, and the ambitions
Catholics honour. These truths, rules, strengths, and ambitions were attractive to
the books first readers. They were answers to the ever-present Why?.
These answers will prove equally attractive to todays readers who, after so many
decades of failed isms, yearn for understanding and commitment even more than did their
grandparents generation. (Item #90810) $14.95 |
